In Memoriam: Eugene Derryberry

Roanoke business lawyer Eugene E. Derryberry died on July 5 after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 64. Colleagues remembered him as a mentor who loved teaching the younger lawyers at his firm, Gentry Locke Rakes and Moore.

The Roanoke Times has the story.

Gene was one of the finest men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was a very special person. He had a lot of friends and I know they feel the same way about him as I do. I still can't believe he died. Even as he approached death's door, I think in the back of my mind I fully expected him to find another way to lower his psa count and beat his cancer back to where he could live with it again. He gave you that kind of confidence when it came to his cancer and to living life. I loved Gene and I am sad that he is gone, but I feel truly fortunate to have crossed his path during my life. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to his wife Joanne who is every bit as exceptional in her life as Gene was in his. If you had the good fortune to know Gene Derryberry then you will understand my sentiments. May he live forever in the hearts and minds of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
